Sustainable Healthcare Leadership

Sustainable leadership refers to a set of systems, practices, and supports that create and maintain a high-performing healthcare system where people are enthusiastic to work. In recent years, the concept of sustainable leadership has been introduced to emphasise the importance of empowering and supportive behaviors towards employees, while striking a balance between patient care, human resources, financial management, and environmental stewardship. Sustainable leadership inspires healthcare workers, healthcare users and the general community to create better systems, deliver better quality care and to use taxpayer-funded resources more wisely.  Sustainable leadership is critical to the future of healthcare service quality and affordability. Chronic system stressors have become inherent to the healthcare system, underscoring the challenges imposed on the wellbeing of healthcare personnel, whose roles and responsibilities render them particularly susceptible to stress. Evidence suggests that leadership plays a pivotal role in providing organisational support, empowerment, and wellbeing promotion, to enhance positive workplace cultures that attract and retain a diverse and high-performing workforce.
